How to write argumentative essay: guide for students.

Argumentative and persuasive writing are considered to be close by their nature and purpose – convincing a reader. However, in our opinion the slight difference between these two types of paper still exists: an argumentative essay presents a stronger claim when an audience is likely to resist against it. Usually, argument essay goes further and discusses an issue on the particular example and provides certain ways of solution to the problem. Here you can find some useful tips on writing an effective argument essay.

  1. 1.       Debatable topic.
  • One of the main requirements to the argumentative writing is presenting the debatable topic. In order to check if it is so you should think if there are people that are against your position and which arguments they bring for defense.
  • The reader should be able to address the topic in “yes” or “no” way.
  • The arguments should be based mostly on the scholarly sources. Religious, moral and cultural may matter for you; however, other people may find them not convincing. Thus, to make sure use the most objective evidence possible.
  • The evidence must be specific enough and refer to the true-to-life facts and events.
  1. 2.       Accepting one position.
  • What you are definitely required to do in argumentative essay is taking one position and defending it.
  • Proving the validity of both sides is not possible in this type of writing. Do not try to apologize and say that your opinion is just the one of many existing views but establish your voice as a writer and an expert in the question, which you discuss.
  • Do not be afraid of presenting your personal opinion on the issue. In fact, it is what you have to do.
  • In order to make your writing convincing we recommend you to:

-          Write with passion;

-          Provide quotations from the authoritative sources;

-          Support your statements with citing, facts, evidence and statistics data;

-          Name reasons for supporting your claims;

-          Disapprove the counterarguments.

  1. 3.       What shouldn’t you do when writing the argumentative paper?
  • Do not use weak qualifiers that refer only to your opinion. Better claim your points without phrases like “I think”, “In my view”, “I believe” and so on.
  • Do not exaggerate your role in the discussion. Do not consider your position as an absolute one.
  • Do not be too strict with moral and religious judgments when talking about contradictory points.
  • Do not think that audience is likely to accept your position. You must prove its validity with every your claim and word.
  • Do not try to spoil the image of other positions, authors and so on. Be sophisticated and tolerant in disapproving the counterarguments.
  1. 4.       Taking the opposite side into account.
  • Once you are familiar with the advantages of your position you must study its weak sides as well. This is how you will prepare to defend it from counterarguments.
  • Also, you should know the strong and weak sides of the opposing position and make your arguments stronger by diminishing the opposite ones.
  • In order to understand the opposing position well you should put yourself in their shoes and not look at them hostile. Try to understand the background, reasoning and influences.
