Each writer has a specific approach to their work and there is no only one correct way of writing essays. Every person has his or her own view on both the discussed issue and the way of putting the thought into writing. However, the typical models and recommendations for improving the papers exist as students tend to have similar issues with writing. Our article will present you four common mistakes and the ways to avoid and fix them.
Mistake #1. Too broad thesis.
- It often appears that the student presents the thesis which touches upon a really wide range of issues or the whole topic in general. The problem here is that all the points cannot be uncovered in the frames of the required word count.
- When you are identifying your topic narrow it to single aspect you will be able to reveal fully in your essay.
- Make sure that your topic is interesting for you, there is a proper source to rely on, and you are able to tell about it adequately following the assignment.
Mistake #2. Poor formulating of thesis statement.
- One develops the thesis that appears to be obvious facts and does not have a point to be discussed. Such thesis statement is considered to be poorly formulating as it is not interesting and disputable.
- Do not just state some fact in your thesis but make a claim, show your position. It should be discussable and the reader may disagree with you as, actually, your task is to persuade the audience to take your side.
- The thesis should not be vague, thus, avoid asking questions in it. Here should go your answer, not a question to the audience.
- Do no use absolute statements, they will not make your thesis stronger, but instead will make the reader hesitate in its validity.
Mistake #3. Topic sentences are absent or not adequate.
- Structure is one of the most important organizing points in your essay. Every paragraph must have a logical organization and, thus, begin with the topic sentence – main idea expressed in the part. However, often the topic sentence is omitted and the writer may fail to condense the paragraph’s meaning in one sentence.
- Make sure that every paragraph has the topic sentence, which is supported by the relevant pieces of evidence.
- Sometimes you may accept an approach of beginning the paragraph with the supporting detail and end it with the topic sentence.
Mistake #4. Writing beyond your subject.
- Trying to show as much knowledge as possible or just writing what the student knows instead of what is needed may lead to off-topic writing. In order to reach the necessary word count the irrelevant facts are provided.
- Follow the thesis, which is factually your road map for writing. Do your best to reveal all the points stated in it.
- Do not include the sentences, which do not support your main idea. Avoid giving your personal reflections if they are not necessary. The information you provide should correspond to your purpose and topic.
