How to write good essays: strategies and techniques

When you are writing an essay you should take into account numerous factors, such as audience, its interests and importance of your topic for them, your ability to persuade the reader, the purpose of essay and so on. What is more, you should be able to use different writing strategies in order to achieve coherence in your paper. Our article will provide you with brief instructions about the basic strategies, such as explaining the process, describing objects, defining concepts and term and giving explanation for cause and effect. We will describe each of the methods separately, although they are often used in combination in one paper.

  1. 1.       Process explanation.
  • In order to explain the process you need to tell your reader how something works or happens or how it is done. It may be a natural event, a process that needs human participation, or the one which requires technology involvement.
  • You should include all the steps of the process from its beginning to the end.
  • Consider your audience’s background as they may need also an explanation of some core concepts or preparation stages.
  • At the beginning you should tell your readers why it should matter for them to know about the process, which you explaining. Also, present a short overview of the process.
  • Lastly, you should tell the audience how your process relates with broader context and what its role and function are.
  • There is no standard size of process explanation. It will depend on how much details you need to include.

  • Giving a description of an object means providing information about its size, shape, appearance, construction or other features. The description will vary depending on the writer’s purpose and reader’s needs, if the subject is concrete or abstract.
  • The effective description should be accurate, specific and detailed.
  • It is good to visualize details when you are describing them. For example, you can indicate their color and shape.
  1. 3.       Defining concepts and terms.
  • Precise definition is very important, especially, if you are using the terms, which may be unfamiliar to the reader. Definitions can be formal, informal and extended.
  • Formal definitions place a term or concept in the class of similar or related ideas and emphasize on its peculiarity.
  • Informal definition provides familiar terms and phrases, which are synonyms to the unknown one. This kind of definition let you not interrupt the flow of your writing.
  • If in order to explain a term you need more than just one phrase or sentence you have to use extended definition, which determines a number of various item’s qualities. The need in extended definition depends on the level of the reader: if he or she is well acknowledged about your subject it may be not necessary. However, if the reader is unprepared you should make sure that you gain mutual understanding with the help of extended definition.
  1. 4.       Cause and effect explanation.
  • You will need this strategy if you have to explain the reasons and results of some event, action etc.
  • Define the relations between the causes and their consequences. All you statement should be based on the evidence you gathered.
  • Make sure that your evidence is representative, demonstrable, relevant to your topic and adequate.
